The presence of Georgian citizenship provides many advantages, the main of which is a visa-free regime with Europe, including the countries of the Schengen zone.
In addition, foreign citizens, holding a Georgian passport are given the opportunity to:

keep your passport (in certain cases, dual citizenship is still possible in Georgia);

simplify access to such services in Georgia as obtaining loans, opening companies and accounts in Georgian banks, access to education;

easily buy agricultural land;

participate in elections;

enjoy the state health insurance program

use most government services online;

children who were born in marriage in a family where, for example, parents have citizenship of Russia and Georgia, receive citizenship of both countries.
The passport of Georgia is ranked 34 in the world by the 2022 Passport Index with a passport power score of 120, ahead of such countries as the Russian Federation, Turkey, Moldova and others.
Over the past few years, a number of amendments have been made to the Law on Citizenship of Georgia.
In September 2018, the Georgian Parliament adopted amendments to the Constitution, according to which Georgian citizens will no longer be deprived of their passports if they have citizenship of another country. The main condition is the official consent of the Georgian authorities. Accordingly, it became possible to retain one’s citizenship and obtain a second one – Georgian, but in the event that the state of primary citizenship allows dual citizenship.
The amendments further provide for residency period extension in the country for obtaining a Georgian passport through the normal naturalization procedure from 5 to 10 years, as well as from 2 to 5 years for spouses of Georgian citizens (simplified procedure).
As a mandatory requirement for almost all applicants, an exam was introduced for knowledge of the Georgian language, the Georgian history and the fundamentals of constitutional law. During the exam, citizenship applicants will be asked to answer 30 questions, 10 questions in each discipline – at least 7 of which the applicant must answer correctly.
There are many nuances and caveats when applying for citizenship that you need to know. Granting Citizenship of Georgia under Regular Procedure
Georgian citizenship is granted under the regular procedure if they meet the following requirements:
- knowledge of the Georgian language, the Georgian history and the basic principles of law;
- have lawfully resided in Georgia for the last 10 consecutive years up to the day of applying for Georgian citizenship;
- have a job and/or real estate in Georgia, or carry on business in the territory of Georgia or hold an interest or shares in a Georgian enterprise;
Granting Citizenship of Georgia under Simplified Procedure
Georgian citizenship is granted under the simplified procedure if they meet the following requirements:
- knowledge of the Georgian language, the Georgian history and the basic principles of law; a person legally married to a Georgian citizen of Georgia and continuously lawfully residing in the country for 5 years prior to applying for citizenship
- A person is recognized as a permanent resident if the overall duration of the person’s entry and stay on the territory of Georgia during does not exceed 90 days in any 180-day period. This period does not include departure for a period of 2 years abroad for training or treatment.
Granting Citizenship of Georgia by way of Exception
The President of Georgia may grant Georgian citizenship by way of exception to a citizen of another country who has made a contribution of exceptional merit to Georgia. The President of Georgia may also grant Georgian citizenship by way of exception to an alien based on state interests – the applicant must know the Georgian language, know the history and basics of law.
- A foreign citizen is exempted from knowledge of the Georgian language, knowledge of history and basics of law in the following cases:
- a foreign citizen makes or has made investments in Georgia and thereby makes or has made a significant contribution to the development of the state economy.
a foreign citizen is successful in sports, science and/or art and is willing to continue his/her activities on behalf of Georgia.
Granting Citizenship of Georgia by way of its Restoration
A citizen of Georgia who has received or is willing to obtain citizenship of another country – in this case, there is only an interview with members of the commission (no test in Georgian language, history and law is required);
- Temporary right to demand the restoration of Georgian citizenship – a former citizen of Georgia who has lost citizenship of Georgia is tested only in the Georgian language.
- Granting Georgian citizenship by way of restoration – Georgian citizenship by way of restoration is granted to persons whose Georgian citizenship has been terminated: unlawfully or by renunciation of Georgian citizenship;
